How to Prepare Your Skin for Laser Hair Removal

You booked your laser hair removal appointment — great. Now what? The steps you take in the days leading up to your session can make a real difference in how comfortable the treatment is and how well it works. Here is a straightforward guide to preparing your skin.

Shave the Area 24 Hours Before

This one surprises a lot of first-timers. Unlike waxing, laser hair removal requires the hair to be present in the follicle — but not above the skin surface. Shaving 24 hours before your appointment removes the surface hair while leaving the follicle intact for the laser to target.

Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams in the weeks before your session. These methods remove the hair root, which is exactly what the laser needs to do its job.

Avoid Sun Exposure for Two Weeks Prior

Tanned or sunburned skin is more sensitive and more prone to side effects from laser treatment. If you have been in the sun, your aesthetician may need to adjust the laser settings or reschedule your appointment to protect your skin.

If you cannot avoid sun exposure, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day and cover the treatment area when outdoors.

Skip Retinoids and Exfoliants for 5 to 7 Days

Retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and physical exfoliants all increase skin sensitivity. Using them close to your appointment can make the treatment more uncomfortable and increase the risk of irritation. Pause these products for at least five to seven days before your session.

Come In With Clean, Product-Free Skin

On the day of your appointment, shower and cleanse the treatment area. Do not apply deodorant, lotion, perfume, or any other product to the skin being treated. These can interfere with the laser and cause irritation.

Stay Hydrated

Well-hydrated skin responds better to laser treatment. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment and keep your skin moisturized — just not on the day of the session itself.

What to Wear

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the treatment area. Tight clothing after laser treatment can cause friction and irritation on freshly treated skin.

Let Your Aesthetician Know About Any Medications

Certain medications — including antibiotics, hormonal treatments, and some acne medications — can increase photosensitivity. Always disclose your current medications during your consultation and before each session.

Following these steps helps ensure your treatment is as effective and comfortable as possible. Have questions before your first appointment? Reach out to us or book a consultation at Celtic Spa in Attleboro, MA.
