Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: How to Care for Your Skin Between Sessions
What you do between laser sessions matters as much as the treatment itself. Here is a simple aftercare routine to protect your skin and get the best results.
Laser hair removal is a process, not a one-time event. The care you give your skin between sessions plays a real role in how comfortable the treatment is and how effective the results are. Here is what to do — and what to avoid — after each appointment.
Immediately After Your Session
Expect some redness and warmth. This is completely normal and typically resolves within a few hours. The treated area may feel similar to a mild sunburn.
Apply a cool compress if the area feels particularly warm or sensitive. A clean cloth dampened with cool water works well.
Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours. This means no hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or intense exercise that causes heavy sweating. Heat can aggravate the treated skin and increase the risk of irritation.
Skincare in the Days After
Moisturize gently. Use a fragrance-free, gentle moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and calm. Avoid anything with active ingredients like retinol, AHAs, or BHAs for at least five days after treatment.
Do not exfoliate. Give your skin time to recover before introducing any physical or chemical exfoliation. Wait at least a week before resuming your normal exfoliation routine.
Skip the self-tanner. Avoid self-tanning products on the treated area between sessions. Artificial tan can interfere with the laser's ability to target the hair follicle accurately.
Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable
Treated skin is more sensitive to UV damage. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day to any area that will be exposed to the sun — and reapply throughout the day if you are spending time outdoors.
Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area for at least two weeks after each session. If you have a beach trip or outdoor event coming up, plan your laser sessions around it.
What to Do About Shedding Hair
In the one to three weeks after your session, you may notice hair appearing to grow back. In most cases, this is actually the treated hair shedding — being pushed out of the follicle as the body clears it. This is a good sign.
You can gently exfoliate (after the first week) to help the shedding process along. Do not wax or tweeze — this removes the follicle that the next laser session needs to target.
Between Sessions: Keep Shaving
Shaving between sessions is fine and will not interfere with your results. Waxing, threading, and depilatory creams should be avoided throughout your entire treatment course, as they remove the hair root.
