The Men's Guide to Waxing: Manzilian & Boyzilian FAQ

More men are waxing than ever — and for good reason. Whether you're an athlete, a guy who just likes to feel clean, or someone who's simply curious, male waxing is completely normal, increasingly popular, and absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about.

But we get it. Walking into a spa for the first time with questions you're not sure how to ask can feel awkward. So let's just answer all of them right here.

What Is a Manzilian or Boyzilian?

A Manzilian (sometimes called a Boyzilian) is the male equivalent of a Brazilian wax. It removes hair from the entire pubic region — front, back, and everything in between.

The terms are used interchangeably. Some spas use "Manzilian" for a full removal and "Boyzilian" for a slightly more conservative version that leaves a small strip or triangle in front, but at Celtic Spa we'll always talk through exactly what you want before we start.

Does It Hurt?

Honestly? Yes, a little — especially the first time. But it's very manageable, and most clients are surprised it's not as bad as they expected.

Here's what helps:

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) about 30–45 minutes before your appointment.
  • Avoid caffeine the morning of — it can heighten sensitivity.
  • Don't go right before your period (yes, this applies to men too in terms of hormonal sensitivity cycles).
  • Breathe. Seriously. Slow, steady breathing makes a real difference.

The good news: it gets easier every time. By your third or fourth wax, most clients describe it as very tolerable.

What Areas Can Men Get Waxed?

Pretty much anywhere. Popular options for men include:

  • Manzilian / Boyzilian — full pubic area, front and back
  • Back wax — one of the most requested services for men
  • Chest wax — full chest or just the center strip
  • Stomach / abdomen — especially popular with athletes
  • Underarms — clean, fresh, and reduces odor
  • Legs — full leg, half leg, or just the lower leg
  • Shoulders — often combined with a back wax
  • Eyebrows — clean up the shape and remove the unibrow
  • Nose and ears — quick and effective

If you're not sure what you want, just ask. We'll help you figure out what makes sense for your goals.

How Long Does Hair Need to Be?

This is one of the most common questions — and one of the most important.

Your hair needs to be at least ¼ inch long (about the size of a grain of rice) for the wax to grip it properly. That's roughly 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving.

If you've been shaving regularly, stop about 3 weeks before your appointment. If you've never shaved, you're probably good to go — just trim down to about ½ inch if it's very long.

Do not shave right before your appointment. It won't work, and you'll have wasted the trip.

How Long Do Results Last?

Most men stay smooth for 3–5 weeks. Hair grows back finer and sparser over time, so the more consistently you wax, the better and longer-lasting your results become.

After several regular waxes, many clients find they only need to come in every 4–6 weeks.

What Should I Do to Prepare?

A little prep goes a long way:

  1. Let hair grow to ¼ inch — don't shave for at least 2–3 weeks beforehand.
  2. Exfoliate gently 24–48 hours before your appointment to remove dead skin and help the wax grip the hair.
  3. Shower the day of — clean skin waxes better.
  4. Avoid tanning or sun exposure on the area for 24 hours before.
  5. Skip the gym the morning of — sweaty skin is harder to wax.
  6. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. You'll thank yourself afterward.

What Happens During the Appointment?

We keep it professional, efficient, and as comfortable as possible.

You'll be given privacy to undress and position yourself on the treatment table. Kate will walk you through exactly what she's doing before she does it. The wax is applied in small sections, a strip is pressed on, and then removed quickly in the direction of hair growth.

For a Manzilian, you may be asked to hold the skin taut in certain areas — your esthetician will guide you. It sounds more awkward than it is. We do this every day.

A full Manzilian typically takes 30–45 minutes.

Is It Weird to Get a Manzilian as a Man?

Not at all. Male waxing has grown significantly in popularity, and professional estheticians are completely accustomed to it. At Celtic Spa, there's zero judgment — just skilled, respectful service.

Many of our male clients are athletes who prefer less body hair for performance and hygiene, men who simply prefer the clean feeling, or partners of clients who recommended it. Whatever your reason, it's valid and you're welcome here.

What Should I Do After My Wax?

Post-wax care is just as important as prep:

  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for 24 hours — heat opens pores and increases irritation risk.
  • Skip the gym for 24 hours — sweat and friction can cause irritation.
  • No tight clothing for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid sun exposure on waxed areas for 24–48 hours.
  • Start exfoliating 48 hours after your wax, 2–3 times per week, to prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Moisturize daily with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion.

Will I Get Ingrown Hairs?

Ingrown hairs are possible, especially in the first few waxes. The good news: regular exfoliation dramatically reduces them, and they become much less common as you continue waxing consistently.

If you're prone to ingrowns, ask us about our post-wax care recommendations — we have products specifically designed to keep skin clear between appointments.

How Much Does a Manzilian Cost?

Pricing varies by service. The best way to get accurate pricing is to check our booking page or give us a call. We're always happy to answer questions before you book.

Ready to Book?

Still have questions? That's completely normal. View our wax services menu or get in touch — we'll take great care of you from the moment you walk in.

Male waxing is one of those things that sounds intimidating until you've done it once. After that, most men wonder why they waited so long.
