Why Environ Uses Vitamin A — and Why It Works

Environ's Vitamin A is retinyl palmitate, not retinoic acid. Here's why that matters for your skin — and why it's the gold standard for long-term skin health.

Why Environ Uses Vitamin A — and Why It Works

If you've ever looked into Environ Skin Care and wondered what makes it different from every other skincare line on the market, the answer comes down to one thing: Vitamin A.

But not all Vitamin A is created equal — and the form Environ uses is one of the most important details to understand before you start.

Environ Uses Retinyl Palmitate, Not Retinoic Acid

When most people hear "Vitamin A in skincare," they think of prescription-strength tretinoin (retinoic acid) — the kind that causes peeling, redness, and sun sensitivity, especially when you first start using it.

Environ takes a different approach. Their Vitamin A is retinyl palmitate, an ester form of Vitamin A that is significantly gentler on the skin. It doesn't cause the same initial irritation, doesn't require a prescription, and is suitable for nearly all skin types — including sensitive skin.

That doesn't mean it's less effective. It means it works differently, and in many ways, more intelligently.

How Retinyl Palmitate Works

Retinyl palmitate is a precursor to retinoic acid. When applied to the skin, it undergoes a conversion process — retinyl palmitate → retinol → retinaldehyde → retinoic acid — meaning your skin converts it into the active form it needs, at the rate it can handle.

This is actually a significant advantage. Rather than flooding your skin with a high concentration of active retinoic acid all at once (which is what causes the classic "retinoid reaction" of peeling and irritation), retinyl palmitate allows your skin to self-regulate the conversion. The result is a more gradual, sustainable improvement with far less risk of sensitivity.

Why Vitamin A Is So Important for Skin Health

Environ's founder, Dr. Des Fernandes — a South African plastic surgeon — developed the line after observing that many of his patients had chronically Vitamin A-deficient skin. Sun exposure, pollution, and daily life deplete the skin's Vitamin A stores constantly.

When skin is Vitamin A-deficient, it shows:

  • Uneven texture and rough patches
  • Fine lines and loss of firmness
  • Enlarged pores
  • Slow cell turnover and dullness
  • Impaired barrier function

Replenishing Vitamin A doesn't just address these symptoms — it supports the skin's fundamental ability to repair, renew, and protect itself. It's not a cosmetic fix; it's nutritional support for your skin.

The Step-Up System: Why Environ Starts Low and Builds

One of the most distinctive things about Environ is its STEP-UP SYSTEM. Products are numbered — AVST 1 through AVST 5 — with progressively higher concentrations of Vitamin A and antioxidants.

You don't start at the highest level. You start at AVST 1 and work your way up over time, allowing your skin to build tolerance and capacity to use higher concentrations effectively.

This is intentional and science-backed. Skin that has been Vitamin A-deficient for years needs time to adapt. Jumping straight to a high concentration — even of the gentler retinyl palmitate — can still cause temporary sensitivity. The step-up approach minimizes that while maximizing long-term results.

What to Expect When You Start Environ

Most people notice their skin feeling more hydrated and looking more even within the first few weeks. Over months of consistent use, the changes become more significant: improved firmness, smoother texture, more radiant tone, and a reduction in fine lines.

Because retinyl palmitate is gentle, you're unlikely to experience the dramatic peeling or redness associated with prescription retinoids. Some people notice a very mild adjustment period — slight dryness or sensitivity — but this typically resolves quickly.

The key is consistency. Environ is a long-term investment in your skin, not a quick fix. The results compound over time.
