What to Expect at Your First Professional Facial

If you've been thinking about booking a facial but keep putting it off because you're not sure what to expect, this is for you.

A professional facial is one of the most effective things you can do for your skin — but if you've never had one, the unknown can feel like a reason to wait. Let's take that off the table.

Before You Arrive

There's not much you need to do to prepare for your first facial, but a few things will help you get the most out of it:

  • Come with a clean face if possible — or at least skip heavy makeup. You'll be cleansed at the start, but arriving with less on your skin gives us more time for treatment.
  • Avoid exfoliating at home for 2–3 days before your appointment. Over-exfoliating before a facial can make your skin more sensitive during treatment.
  • Skip retinoids for 48 hours beforehand if you're using them. This reduces the chance of sensitivity during extractions or active treatments.
  • Let us know about any skin concerns when you book — breakouts, sensitivity, recent procedures, or anything you're hoping to address.

The Consultation

Every facial at Celtic Spa starts with a brief consultation. This isn't just a formality — it's how we make sure your treatment is actually tailored to your skin.

We'll ask about your skin concerns, your current routine, any products you're using, and whether you have any sensitivities or allergies. We'll also take a look at your skin under good lighting to assess your skin type, texture, and any areas that need attention.

This is a good time to ask questions. If you're curious about a specific concern — acne, pigmentation, fine lines, dryness — bring it up. The more we know, the more targeted your treatment can be.

The Cleanse

The facial begins with a thorough double cleanse to remove any makeup, sunscreen, and surface buildup. This step matters more than it sounds — properly cleansed skin absorbs active ingredients far more effectively than skin with a barrier of residue on it.

You'll notice the room is warm, the lighting is soft, and the table is comfortable. Most people relax almost immediately once they lie down.

Exfoliation

After cleansing, we exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and prepare your skin for the active ingredients that follow. Depending on your skin type and the treatment you've booked, this might be a gentle enzyme exfoliant, a light chemical peel, or a manual exfoliation.

This is one of the steps that makes a professional facial noticeably different from what you can do at home. Professional-grade exfoliants work at a deeper level and are chosen specifically for your skin — not a one-size-fits-all product.

Steam and Extractions (If Needed)

Steam is used to soften the skin and open pores, making extractions easier and more effective. Not every facial includes extractions — it depends on your skin and what you're there to address.

If extractions are part of your treatment, this is the step people are sometimes nervous about. Honest answer: it can be slightly uncomfortable in areas with congestion, but it shouldn't be painful. We work carefully and methodically, and we'll always check in with you.

Extractions done properly — by a trained professional — are far safer and more effective than anything you'd do at home. Attempting to extract at home without the right technique or tools can cause scarring and spread bacteria. Leave this one to us.

Active Treatment

This is where the real work happens. Depending on your skin concerns and the facial you've booked, this phase might include:

  • Vitamin A and antioxidant serums (Environ treatments)
  • Targeted treatments for acne, pigmentation, or dehydration
  • Facial massage to stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Masks customized to your skin type

The active treatment phase is also the most relaxing part of the facial. Facial massage in particular has a noticeable effect — most people are half-asleep by the end of it.

Moisturizer and SPF

The facial finishes with a moisturizer suited to your skin type and, if it's daytime, SPF. Your skin will be more receptive to products immediately after a facial, so what goes on at the end matters.

We'll also walk you through what we used and why, and make recommendations for your home care routine if that's helpful.

What Your Skin Will Feel Like After

Most people leave a facial looking noticeably brighter and feeling like their skin can breathe. The "facial glow" is real — it's a combination of improved circulation, cleared congestion, and freshly hydrated skin.

A few things to keep in mind for the rest of the day:

  • Skip heavy makeup for the rest of the day if you can. Your skin is freshly cleansed and active — let it breathe.
  • Avoid intense heat (saunas, hot showers, heavy exercise) for 24 hours. Your skin may be slightly more sensitive than usual.
  • Don't pick at anything. If extractions were done, some areas may look slightly red for a few hours. This is normal and resolves quickly.
  • Wear SPF the next morning. Exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage.

How Often Should You Get a Facial?

For most people, once a month is the sweet spot. Your skin renews itself on roughly a 28-day cycle, and a monthly facial aligns with that rhythm — clearing congestion, supporting cell turnover, and delivering active ingredients at the right intervals.

That said, if you're working on a specific concern like acne or pigmentation, more frequent treatments in the beginning can accelerate results. We'll talk through what makes sense for your skin during your consultation.
